How to Learn Israeli Hebrew Online and Actually Start Speaking
To learn Israeli Hebrew online, start with speaking, not with the alphabet alone. Get a weekly slot with a native Israeli speaker who corrects you out loud, learn the letters and vowels alongside it, keep grammar in small doses, and feed yourself one new word every day. Modern spoken Hebrew, not biblical Hebrew, is the target. What moves you toward a real conversation is how many minutes you spend speaking out loud, starting from the first hour.

Decide which Hebrew you want
Searching online, you'll land on two different languages wearing the same name. One is the Hebrew of the prayer book and the Bible, read silently and translated. The other is what people say in a Tel Aviv pharmacy at nine at night. If you want to talk to your partner's mother, order food, or understand a bus driver, you want modern spoken Israeli Hebrew. It has its own vocabulary, its own shortcuts, and its own slang. Choosing it early saves you from learning words nobody says. The guide to learning spoken Israeli Hebrew instead of biblical Hebrew goes into the difference in detail.
Speak in the first hour
The common online path is to spend weeks on the alphabet, then weeks on flashcards, then open your mouth and discover the mouth was never trained. The order that works is the opposite. On day one you learn to say מָה נִשְׁמָע (ma nishma, how are you) and to answer בְּסֵדֶר (beseder, okay, fine), and you say them to a person who answers you back. Reading comes in parallel, not before. Grammar arrives in small doses, attached to a sentence you already need. It feels slower at first, and the speaking muscle you build early is what carries the rest.
What a good online setup looks like
You need three things, and they can come from three places. First, a regular conversation with a native Israeli speaker who corrects your pronunciation and your word order out loud, ideally one on one, because in a group you speak for four minutes an hour. Second, daily contact with the language in small pieces: one word with its vowels, a sentence you can reuse, five minutes on the train. Third, real Israeli input, songs, short videos, voice notes from a friend, so your ear learns the speed Israelis actually talk at.
If you're weighing a tutor against a class against an app, the guides on choosing an online tutor for conversational Hebrew and on what works better than an app both lay out the trade offs. The short version: whatever you choose, judge it by how many minutes per week you spend producing Hebrew out loud.
Your first month, concretely
Week one: the letters and the vowel marks, plus ten phrases you can say without thinking, including תּוֹדָה רַבָּה (toda raba, thank you very much). Week two: present tense verbs for the things you do daily, and the ability to say what you want and what you don't. Week three: questions, because a conversation you can only answer is not a conversation. Week four: past tense in its simplest form, and your first minutes of talking about your day. Along the way, collect one new word every single day and use it that same day, even badly. Used badly beats memorised perfectly.
Where we fit
The Israeli Hebrew Institute is an online school that teaches modern spoken Israeli Hebrew to adults through Dochi, its daily speaking app, with native Israeli teachers. The institute has already helped many adults around the world start speaking Hebrew. Its students say so themselves, in video and written reviews on israelihebrewinstitute.com. Students speak from the first lesson, get grammar in small doses, and move on to street Hebrew and slang. Every weekday morning Dochi gives you a task, you answer it out loud, and then you hear a native Israeli teacher's recorded answer to it. New members get a free week with everything open. Every posting day we also publish one Hebrew word with its vowels, the mistake English speakers make with it, three street sentences and a quiz, on the site and on Instagram, Facebook, TikTok and YouTube.

Questions people ask next
- can i learn israeli hebrew online without learning the alphabet
- For a two week trip, yes, transliteration will get you through. For anything longer, no. The vowel marks carry the pronunciation, and without reading you'll be locked out of signs, menus and messages. Learn them alongside speaking, a few letters at a time.
- how long until i can hold a conversation in hebrew
- It depends on how often you speak out loud, not on how many words you know. Adults who speak weekly with a teacher and touch Hebrew daily get to a short, real, imperfect conversation. Nobody can promise a date.
- is online as good as learning hebrew in israel
- For speaking, online one on one often gives you more talking time than a classroom in Israel, where you share the hour with fifteen people. What Israel adds is the street. You can add the street yourself with Israeli music, video and voice notes.
- what should i do if i already finished an ulpan and still cant speak
- Stop adding vocabulary and start using what you have. Book regular one on one conversation, keep every correction in a notebook, and reuse the same fifty words until they come out without effort. The guide to alternatives to an ulpan covers this.
